I’ve been using procreate since 2019 and time blinds me but the app SUCKS ASS!!! I can’t even change from apps anymore because the simple interface has been engraved into my brain permanently and i have meltdowns whenever i try a different art program, wish i was joking…
Comparing it to ibis paint, i’d say it’s a really hard debate for me, and procreate definitely wins for interface because ibis paint looks so ugly im sorry, and the brush making on procreate is awesome… now let’s talk about the rest. Can someone tell me who the fuck decided to put the BUCKET TOOL ON THE UPPER RIGHT SIDE??? Every time i try to use the bucket tool i accidentallly trigger the ipad’s pannel control, hell, talking about the bucket tool, IT SUCKS, it does a terrible job at filling in gaps, and if you adjust the bucket tool treshold, it changes the color of the selected area if the color is too similar, or it changes the surrounding colors of a everything if the treshold is too high, and if the treshold is too low, it will inevitably have uncolored spots that you have to fill in manually because it never does its job right
now that the bucket tool rant is over, i want to talk about everything else, layer limits? horrible, i use high resolutions often and i struggled keeping up with layers until i upgraded to an ipad with better ram, even so, i start to notice lag after multiple layers, which makes it horrible because i often use a lot of layers to make my tweened animations.
Another thing i really want to complain about are color related, most importantly how the color picker doesn’t work when using the reference tool, you have to MANUALLY INSERT THE IMAGE INTO THE CANVAS TO GET THE ACCURATE COLOR. and that is incredibly annoying when working on low resolution canvases, because it will look pixelated and a lot of details from the reference will be lost!!! it’s just incredibly inconvenient to make a separate color palette for every character you have to draw, specially when doing commissions so you’d have to constantly deal with that. I also find it incredibly annoying that the CMYK color profile for procreate is highly innacurate, i know it’s supposed to be a simulation, but comparing photoshop CMYK to Procreate’s is insane, i had to work with CMYK to make. a keychain of my oc, and the colors looked horrible, i can’t afford photoshop and don’t know how to use it, so i just had to make an alternate color palette for my oc, JUST FOR A KEYCHAAIN!!!!
I’d also like to complain about the selection tool, it’s actually pretty good with the lasso tool, but my issue is that it can get somewhat wonky??? that might just be me, but i wanted to mention that, the automatic selection is not great, but it does its job, i guess. There’s currently a bug that randomly de-selects random stuff you selected after tapping on another thing to select, sorry for the strange wording u genuinely don’t know how to describe this
^ similarly to the selection thing, now moving onto the transform tool, god, i have so much to shit on for this thing, but it’s also not that justifiable since it uses raster graphics, but the transform it’s noticeably worse than ibis’, first of all, yes, i know the difference between the interpolation settings, i just think they look worse here, i personally use the nearest neighbor setting, because it doesn’t make my line art blurry, the other 2 make it too blurry for me and it’s just a pain in the ass to deal with when drawing on lower resolutions. The nearest neighbor setting is best, definitely, but it makes things look jagged very quickly, that’s more of a personal prejudice i have against procreate, but this is a rant, and i love complaining, so i’m leaving it here
Let’s not even mention Procreate Dreams, that app was so broken, i don’t know if they fixed it yet but it was so hard to use and was NOT user friendly. I prefer making frame by frame animations on procreate itself because procreate dreams is just that bad. i’m currently in a very slow process of moving all my frame-by-frame animations to toonsquid, it’s SO much better, i’m just struggling to get used to the brushes, i use a custom procreate brush i literally can’t live without it, but for now i use a default pen with really fucked up pen sensitivity settings :p
All of that aside, i think procreate is not BAD, it’s actually pretty goated for the price they are selling it, the custom brushes are dope, the inferface is simple and digestible, its very customizable (for ipad app standards,) and it’s also very convenient because it’s an ipad app! I literally struggle so hard to work on pc for anything because i get overwhelmed easily with new things and most specially complex interfaces, i just wish it wasn’t so buggy, there’s always a new bug i discover every now and then, the app also has some reaaally strange and inconvenient design choices that piss me off, either way i dont think i’ll be leaving the app anytime soon, i’m forever chained to using this app, i also have emotional attachment to inanimate things so that doesn’t help LMFAO
i think this is all i could muster up rn, if you want to complain about procreate here feel free to, it might even help me remember even more things on why i hate it so much.
